Advent 2016 Reflections: Day 2

Advent 2016 Reflections: Day 2

My Advent experience this year is greatly enriched by my daily readings of John Piper’s The Dawning of Indestructible Joy. My human abilities, however, just can’t keep up with writing down my thoughts into blog posts but here I am, trying to catch up. 🙂

December 2: Prepare Your Heart for Christ

“How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?” – John 5:44″

In this reflection, John Piper points to the real reason of the Christmas season: Jesus Christ. And in order for us to truly receive Christ for who He really is — and not just a mere ornament of the busy holidays — Piper lists down the ways on how to prepare our hearts for Christ:

  1. The heart must become disenchanted with the praise of men.
  2. The heart must become disenchanted with the sufficiency of money and things to satisfy the soul.
  3. The heart must long for consolation and a redemption beyond what the world can give.
  4. There must be a revelation from God the Father, opening the eyes of the heart, so that it can see Jesus.

Christmas has indeed created in me longings that I thought can be satisfied with temporal things. I crave luxurious vacations, new clothes, beautiful things — and although I recognize that there is nothing wrong with wanting these, I must also constantly remind myself that I need first to long for Christ and recognize that He alone satisfies.

“If there is a longing in your heart this Advent for something that the world has not been able to satisfy, might not this longing be God’s Christmas gift preparing you to see Christ as consolation and redemption and to receive him for who he really is?”

May we long for Christ more than we long for other things. ♥
